The government has declared war on Ferguson, Missouri.
The freaking national guard is in Ferguson, Missouri. This seriously can be handled appropriately by investigating the actions of the Ferguson police and punishing those within the force that have miscarried the law, NOT by bringing in more guns and threatening scared people.
I don’t know how many times this has to be stated, but Michael Brown WAS NOT involved in an altercation with police over stealing last Saturday. The first thing that should disgust people about this situation is that the police lied about why he was stopped and doctored the police report AFTER he was murdered in order to give the officer some sort of justification or cause. Even if Mike Brown was a lily white teenager, this miscarriage of justice and abuse of power by those sworn to protect and uphold the law should still be accounted for.
Mike Brown shouldn’t be a martyr follow because he shouldn’t be dead in the first place. Use of lethal force against an unarmed teenager, essentially for talking about/failure to comply with a police officer is wrong, and if it is not illegal, we should be pushing for policy change to address that. What strikes me most about your comment is that you believe he was shot for another reason other than his skin. I challenge you to provide me with a single one. What Mike Brown, and so many other recent deaths have illustrated, is the purest representation of racism in today’s America. It is not an overt action as to target a young black man for murder (think lynch mob), but instead the intrinsic belief that his very existence is a threat to the community (thus he must be addressed as a threat by law enforcement). The fact of the matter is that young white kids are not met with this same scrutiny, though to say that they don’t drink, consume drugs, and participate in other illegal activity (even petty robbery) is absurd. But those things are forgivable by our society, even expected and viewed as rights of passages for those teens, while deemed as criminal and inflammatory for Black and Brown teens. The casual acceptance that Mike Brown may have deserved to die, same as Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Renisha McBride, and so many other is the manifestation of this type of thinking. That their lives had diminished value because of their behavior is tantamount to saying a woman invited sexual assault if she “sleeps around.” (And really, we could go on all day about the analogues of rape culture and structural racism in our society).
Thanks for presenting your thoughts respectfully, but it concerns me that people are spending more time trying to justify a young man’s death rather than address to litany of abuses, distortions, and all out corruption of law enforcement and civil liberties. These should be evident and accessible issues for all to rally around, and yet, people are still flooding my inbox with reasons why it is okay that Mike Brown was gunned down. I can’t help but wonder why this teen’s life was so meaningless if for anything other than racism.
One of the bullets entered the top of Mr. Brown’s skull, suggesting his head was bent forward when it struck him and caused a fatal injury, according to Dr. Michael M. Baden, the former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, who flew to Missouri on Sunday at the family’s request to conduct the separate autopsy. It was likely the last of bullets to hit him, he said. Mr. Brown, 18, was also shot four times in the right arm, he said, adding that all the bullets were fired into his front.
Meanwhile, independent autopsy results from Mike Brown have been released. #staywoke #murdered #dontshoot
My fucking soul hurts just thinking about that poor boy
I bet everyone else feels it too.
